One way to directly support soldiers and their families is to take up a collection of books for your nearest airport USO lounge. These areas are always in need of new reading material, which are offered free for soldiers to take with them for long deployment flights overseas. The stocks are always being depleted, and the USO is always happy to take more. Contact your nearest major airport to learn who the USO rep is in your area and arrange a donation!
