In the U.S. armed forces, there are channels for dealing with discrimination and harassment. If you find yourself in a situation where sexual discrimination, race prejudice or other unlawful 'hostile work environments' are allowed to continue, the Office of the Inspector General is where complaints like these are handled. Many people don't know how to go about making a proper case for an investigation.
While it's permissable to go directly to the Inspector General, cases where formal complaints have been made up your chain of command carry much more weight. If you can show documentation of a situation that you have tried to recify "through channels" in the U.S. armed forces. Your local Inspector General is required to investigate all complaints, and by regulation no retaliation may happen to those who complain.
