February 17, 2006, Newsletter Issue #4: The VA Headstone Benefit

Tip of the Week

Among the many veteran benefits connected with death and burial, the best known is probably the military funeral. What isn't as well-known is that the VA will provide a free headstone or grave marker for eligible veterans. This military benefit is available for U.S. veterans no matter where they may be worldwide.

One important thing to keep in mind; if the death occurred before December 27th, 2001 this benefit is only available for graves not already marked with a headstone. As with most VA benefits, this isn't automatic--you must apply to receive the benefit through the VA.
