Some in the military eventually get interested in knowing what their ancestors may have done in the service of their country. Many families have extensive records tracing their 'military genealogy' but others will probably need to do a bit of detective work to learn how their families fit in to US military history. The first, and best place to begin your search is in your own attic. If you have old family bibles, diaries or other artifacts you may find lists of names, wedding dates and other valuable information to help you begin your search. If you are in possession of the social security number for any of those you think may have served, contact the VA for information on how to request service records on that person. Tracing your family genealogy through US military history may be a bit time consuming, but the rewards are often well worth the investment.
