At one time, it was possible to send care packages to people in war zones simply by addressing the box to "any soldier" and sending to a designated address. Due to terrorism concerns, that program was discontinued, but there are still ways you can send things to the troops.
One avenue to explore? Try contacting your local military base and speak to the military chaplain about making care package donations to troops in the field. Chaplains have a unique mission that places them in combat zones in order to give comfort and aid to soldiers.
Helping their soldiers is the chaplain's number one priority. If the chaplain doesn't have any collection programs going on at the moment, he may be able to refer you to a base that is actively seeking donations, letters of support or other contributions to raise the morale of American soldiers in the field.
