January 19, 2007, Newsletter Issue #47: Overseas and Stateside Assignments

Tip of the Week

Navigating the military assignment system can be tricky, and there is much 'insider knowledge' to be learned over the course of a military career. Your military rank, time in service and other factors can affect what assignments you are eligible for, and your time spent in stateside jobs also factors in. Did you know that in some circumstances, you may swap assignments with someone of equal rank, time in service and career field? In other cases you can opt out of being assigned to two consecutive overseas jobs in a row, simply by checking the "not a volunteer" or overseas duty.

Beware--the more time you put in stateside, the more eligible you are in many cases for an overseas or overseas "remote" assignment. It's best to get a balance of stateside duty and overseas work. If you volunteer for a less-than-ideal, but still tolerable assignment you may well skip being sent to a location you'd rather avoid. Your detailer, assignments chief or First Sergeant can help with expert advice on your next move. It's also a good idea to ask the advice of anyone with more military rank than you---they could be a wealth of information!
